In Conversation With… Nakul Patni, Co-founder, The Laundry Basket

Can you please help us know your professional background?

I am a Chartered Accountant with a Masters Degree From SP Jain School of Global Management. I have worked at PwC for 18 months and currently I am the co-founder of The Laundry Basket and Stowd.

Along with me, Ankit Kala is Co-founder of The Laundry Basket. Ankit Kala is a business professional with 5+ years of experience in the Iron and Steel Industry.

What inspired you to become an entrepreneur?

I am inspired by the fact that every day is a new day. Being in a business, every day is unique and comes with its own set of challenges and opportunities. You never know what is going to come which makes it very exciting and keeps you on your toes always.

Can you please tell us about your venture ‘The Laundry Basket’?

The Laundry Basket is an on-demand laundry service provider based out of Bangalore. We make laundry easy through our doorstep laundry pick-up and delivery services via our laundry mobile app. The Laundry Basket works on a franchisee model and provides opportunities to people to set-up their own laundry business. We are currently present in 4 cities with 18 stores.

At The Laundry Basket, we offer:

  • Wash, Dry and Fold Steam Press
  • Dry Cleaning
  • Shoe Cleaning

What have been the most challenging times in your journey so far?

The past 18 months have been the most challenging times. The Covid-19 pandemic and the lockdowns has made it really difficult for us.

Most of our customers are bachelors or students; at present most of them are either working from home or have left the cities. Due to this we have lost out on some revenue while still incurring fixed costs.

What steps did you take to reduce the impact of Covid-19 pandemic on your business?

Our focus on hygiene, since the start has helped us a lot. We have offered our customers free doorstep pick-up and delivery services, so that they need not step outside to get their laundry done.

We have implemented complete safety protocols – Contactless Deliveries, Independent Hygiene Wash and Regular Temperature Monitoring of our workers. We have also introduced a disinfectant wash cycle for customers who ask for additional disinfection of their garments.

What is your approach to identify business opportunities?

I feel, the best way to identify business opportunities is to listen to customers – Their problems, experiences, frustrations, feedback and complaints.

This valuable customer insight can help in identifying key business opportunities to expand and develop current products and services.

What was the feeling like when you got the first client appreciation for your venture?

The feeling that you experience is that of contentment and satisfaction; that you were able to create something and serve someone to their level of expectations. This is something I feel every entrepreneur wishes to accomplish. This is what drives us to keep building things that our customers love.

What is the problem you are trying to solve with your venture ‘The Laundry Basket’?

Laundry is an annoyance, which many people just want to do away with. No one wants to spend her/his weekend washing dirty clothes. The laundry industry in India is currently highly unorganized.

At The Laundry Basket, we are trying to make laundry organized, easy and convenient for everyone. We aim to provide hygienic wash processes with a quick turnaround. Most of our customers get back their laundry delivered within 24 hours.

What is the USP of your business? Why should consumers choose you over the competition?

At The Laundry Basket we offer ‘guaranteed independent wash’ process for each customer – No customer’s garments are washed with that of any other customer.

Separate wash for each customer ensures that the hygiene is maintained.

Schedule on the do: Our mobile app enables our customers to schedule a laundry pick-up right from their doorstep. This makes it an extremely convenient way to get laundry done.

Superfast Deliveries: We try to deliver the garments back to customers, fresh and clean, as fast as possible. Most of our orders are delivered back to the customer within 24 hours.
